Name Change Segment

This section will ask if the Law Corporation's name has changed.

  

Reporting requirements will vary depending on whether you are submitting a new application or renewing your registration with the State Bar. Please identify your application type and review the instructions below that correspond to your selection.

Annual Renewal

The Law Corporation name and corporate designation entered must match EXACTLY the Law Corporation name and corporate designation on the certified Secretary of State documents. See the Law Corporation webpage for more information on names, abbreviations, and ending designations.

  1. Answer the question, “Has there been a name change for your Law Corporation?” 

  • If the Law Corporation has changed its name since registering or since the last renewal application, select “Yes” and input the Law Corporation’s new name and corporate designation in the text fields.
    • Ensure the name complies with rule 7.1(a) of the California Rules of Professional Conduct.
    • Do not include the ending designation in the name field.
    • Refer to the Articles of Incorporation if unsure of the ending designation.
    • If the LC has changed its name since last renewing the LC registration, they are required to upload an amended Article of Incorporation (AOI). See the Articles of Incorporation for more information on the requirements related to amended Articles of Incorporation documentation.
  • If the Law Corporation has not changed its name, select “No.”

     2.    Once the information on record is up to date, click “Continue” at the bottom of the page. 

New Registration Application

New registration applications will not be required to complete the Name Change segment as part of the initial registration process.

⇒ Please Note: Report a name change after your new registration application has been approved. 

  • Ensure you  received your registration number and certificate.

  • Update the LC's name on record by returning to the Agency Billing application and locating your approved online application.

  • Simply select the "Special Report" option available in the Law Corporation list view.

  • Please note that an amended Articles of Incorporation is required when changing the name of a Law Corporation.
