How to Apply for the Legal Specialist Examination

  1. Log into the Applicant Portal:
    The first step is to log into the Applicant Portal using your credentials. Do not create an account. Email LegalSpec@calbar.ca.gov to be provided with your login information.
    * Note: The application for the Legal Specialist Examination is available March of the examination year (March 2025, etc.). You can send an email to the LS Inbox with your bar number and area of interest (Criminal State, Criminal Federal, Appellate Civil, Appellate Criminal, Estate Planning, etc.) to be added to the list of interested applicants to receive information once it becomes available.
  2. Navigate to View Forms:
    Once logged in, you will land on the home page. Look for and click on the "View Forms" option. This will give you access to various State Bar applications and forms.
  3. Find the Examinations Section:
    Scroll down the page until you reach the Examinations section. Here, you will find options related to different examinations.
  4. Select the Legal Specialist Examination Application:
    In the Examinations section, look for the "Legal Specialist Examination Application" and click on it. This will allow you to begin the application process for the examination.
  5. Launch Your Application:
    After selecting the Legal Specialist Examination Application, you will see an option to "Launch Application." Click on this to start your application.
  6. Complete the Application Form:
    You will be directed to a page where you need to enter and verify various pieces of information to determine your eligibility for the examination. Click on the tabs provided on the left side of the page to input the required details.
    Note: If you have previously held certification in, or taken the exam in the desired specialty area, you must link your LS Certification Record. Go to “My Certifications” to find the LS Certification Record number. After linking your certification record, please choose the specialty area exam for which you are seeking to register.
  7. Verify Your Information:
    Take a moment to review all the information you've entered to ensure its accuracy. It is crucial to double-check to avoid any issues with your examination eligibility.
  8. Submit Your Application:
    Once you have completed all the necessary fields and verified the information, it is time to submit your application. Click on the "submit" button located on the verification tab to finalize the process.
